SPEED Facts

Research by: Speed Fact:
Randall Mays "The evidence of increased pedestrian safety at 20 mph is strong. Based on numerous studies, the chance of a pedestrian being seriously injured or killed if struck by a car is 45% if the car is traveling at 30 mph but only 5% at 20 mph. Research also shows that 20 mph zones reduce the incidence of traffic accidents by 60% and cut child pedestrian and child cyclist accidents by 67%.

B Kane "The longest non-stop stretch of road in Terrell Hills is 0.9 miles. [(1) Garraty between H. Wurzbach and Eldon AND (2) Geneseo between N. New Braunfels and Dover] Driving this distance at 30 mph takes 1 minute, 48 seconds. At 20 mph, this takes 2 minutes, 42 seconds.

Net difference is 54 seconds. Or in other words, it "costs" us less than a minute to slow from 30 mph to 20 mph. Seems like a pretty fair trade to me."

W Snell  According to multiple sources at the Terrell Hills Police Dept, the average speed recorded on Wiltshire was 28MPH, using a very precise hose timing system. A most important fact from this study is however, every 6th car was traveling in excess of 35MPH. In my opinion, using "averages" is not a realistic way to analyze this safety issue.
